AndroidTutor2018- After purchasing a new smartphone, most people don't waste time making the root their first priority. I successfully rooted our Xperia Z and will explain the process step by step.
Before you get started, you should pay attention to the following things:
Be sure that you have the Xperia Z with either model number C6602 or C6603. I tried it out with an Xperia Z C6603.
In addition, ensure that the firmware version 10.1.A.1.350 is installed on your Xperia Z. It probably wouldn't work with any other firmware.
During the root procedure, all of your data will be lost. Make sure you've created a backup beforehand!
And as usual, try these instructions at your own risk! If something happens to go awry, you are no longer entitled to a guaranty and we won't claim any responsibility.
Unlocking the bootloader
Open the telephone app on your Xperia Z and punch in the following code: *#06#
The IMEI for this device will now be shown. Write it down, you'll need it for later on!
Download the Fastboot package with the USB drivers from XDA-developers and extract it.
Hold on to the Xperia Z, keep your finger pressed on the button for volume up and connect your smartphone to your PC via USB. The LED light on the top right corner should turn blue.
Windows will now start by installing the drivers. If the installation doesn't work right away, then specify in the driver search the path to the previously downloaded Fastbook package.
Call up the website unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com and follow the directions on how to unlock the bootloader. If you've done everything correctly, you should soon receive an email from Sony with a code to unlock the bootloader.
This is what the email from Sony looks like. Here you will find the code needed to unlock the bootloader.
Now open the Fastboot folder on your PC (the folder, in which you will find the file ''fastboot.exe") and hold down SHIFT on your keyboard. Now right click on your Mouse in an open spot in Windows Explorer and select ''Open prompt here...''.
A new command bar will open. Now enter the following command:
fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce getvar version
If you obtain a value of ''0.5'' (or a similar number), then you can directly enter the next command:
fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce oem unlock 0xKEY
You will need to replace the ''KEY'' with the key you received via email.
Xperia Z's bootloader has now been unlocked.
Rooting Xperia Z
Download the ''CF-Auto-Root Kernel'' and ''Stock insecure Kernel'' from XDA-developers.
Copy both files in the same folder, just like the fastboot.exe file.
Open the prompt again and type in the following command:
fastboot flash boot Z_DooMLoRD_CF-Auto-Root-ported_FW-350.img
After the new boot image has been flashed, subsequently enter the command:
fastboot reboot
Android's little red man should appear on the screen and after about ten seconds your Xperia Z will start again. Afterwards remove the USB cable.
Now hold down the button for volume up and the power button until the Xperia Z vibrates three times and shuts down.
Start the Xperia Z again in Fastboot mode (press ''volume up'' and connect the phone to your computer via USB).
This is what your smartphone will look like when it is in Fastboot mode. The LED light will turn blue.
Wait until the LED light flashes blue and input the following command into the prompt:
fastboot flash boot Z_DooMLoRD_insecure_FW-350.img
After the flash has sucessfully worked, enter the command:
fastboot reboot
The Xperia Z should start again. You can now disconnect the USB cable.
Now download the app ''Busybox'' from the Play Store, start it up and install the Busybox in /system/xbin.
Choose the correct directory from the installation and select ''Install' found in the bottom right corner.
You're done! Now your Xperia Z has a root!

Nice guide but I wouldn't think "most people" want to root their smartphone when they get it. I can't think of even *one* of my friends or family who would have *heard* of the concept, let alone want to try it out on their new phone. Maybe "most tech writers" is more like it :-)

Doesn't exude confidence when there are spelling mistakes in the instructions.
