Nothing new here. But could be interesting for newbies. Books are still a good source, actually. YouTube videos aren#t always the way to go. Better yet, sign up for a course.

5 Futuristic Ways to Keep Thieves From Stealing Your Android

5 Futuristic Ways to Keep Thieves From Stealing Your Android -[AndroidTutor2018]

AndroidTutor2018- (Dogs: the most obedient security guards)
When Face Unlock was first announced on the Galaxy Nexus, the Internet erupted over whether or not it was actually a worthy security feature. Does a security mechanism that can't differentiate between a picture of the user and the actual user's face go far enough to prevent would-be thieves? Perhaps not. So here at AndroidPIT we've tried to think of some other ways we might secure our phones (given unlimited resources and futuristic technology). Here they are:
Fingerprints

(Photo: Androidzoom.com)

Fingerprint technology has been around for a while. It's a fast, accurate and foolproof way of securing your Android phone. There are currently a number of fingerprint scanning apps out there but their results are quite dubious. A good fingerprint security method would come baked into your Android's hardware.
3D Facial Mapping

(Photo: Signdealz.com)

Face Unlock on Android 4.0 is great, but it doesn't go far enough. To break into a friend's smartphone, all you need is to hold a picture of them next to the camera (a recent update is supposed to track blinking but with varying success). 3D facial mapping would utilize two front facing cameras to map a three-dimensional photograph of themm thus spoiling the efforts of picture-holding thieves.
Voice Recognition

Voice recognition could also be used to unlock smartphones. In order to unlock your phone, you could have a special phrase like "banana phone."
Tasers

(The Stunfone for iPhone is actually fake)
Perhaps the most effective way to keep would-be thieves out of your smartphone would be to install a small taser on the device that shocks unauthorized users (the phone would know they were unauthorized after they entered in a series of incorrect passwords or failed to match the owner's fingerprints). Downside? Accidentally shocking yourself.
Carbon Fiber Briefcase

(Photo: Hermes)
If you really, really, REALLY don't want thieves messing around with your Android, you could always buy a titanium portable briefcase, like this Hermes briefcase, for carrying around your phone. At $16,000, it's quite the investment, but what's more valuable than your Android?

How can face (and voice) recognition *PREVENT* someone from stealing my Android phone?

I think androidpit needs to hired some Android knowledgeable staff members. Or at least one.

How Safe Is Your Password, Really? -[AndroidTutor2018]

How Safe Is Your Password, Really? -[AndroidTutor2018]

AndroidTutor2018- Conventional wisdom has it that passwords should be long, alphanumeric and, most importantly, need to be changed on a regular basis. In fact, as many of you already know, companies require their employees to change their passwords at regular intervals for security purposes. As it turns out, much of what we believe in when it comes to password security isn't necessarily true, as several researchers and studies have recently pointed out. The science may be complex, but we've boiled it down so that you can find out how to generate an “uncrackable” password.
It has become a common practice for websites to evaluate your passwords on a scale from weak to strong. Based on the algorithms used by websites such as Facebook and Twitter, alphanumeric passwords get the highest “security” rating. As developer Cameron Morris managed to discover, however, a lot of these supposedly safe passwords can be hacked by an amateur in less than one day. If you take an alphanumeric password such as “34Lakers56” named after your favorite basketball, it may pass the Facebook strength test, but leaves you totally exposed to outside attacks.
Solution?
Morris completely redefines the concept of password strength. Instead of judging the value of a password on a relative scale, Morris developed an analytical tool that could determine how much time it would hypothetically take to crack your password.
Using his Passfault Analyzer (a tool which I rurge all of you to try out), you'll encounter some surprising results. Turns out my favorite password (which I use to guard my WiFi connection) could be cracked in just 3 days, whereas it would take several months to decode my childhood password which is a made-up word (apparently, baby words work great as passwords!). Obviously, we would all like to have passwords that would take at least a billion years to crack.
You may not like to hear this, but truly secure passwords need to be long, really, long, like anything from 20 to 30 symbols. More importantly, your password should not include any words that can be found in the dictionary. Generating a cryptic alphanumeric password devoid of words may be a difficult endeavor, especially when you have to memorize the bloody thing.
So as a recent Carnegie-Mellon study suggests, once you've found a password that would take lightyears to crack – stick to it. Changing your password actually undermines your security and you can't be expected to memorize a random set of characters every three months. Then we start writing these passwords down on bits of paper– and it's a downward slope from there on in terms of security. That's why it's essential to memorize one or two bulletproof passwords and test them with the Passfault Analyzer tool. Can't think of a good “uncrackable” password? Here's a good tutorial video on how to come up with the perfect password and leave the hackers biting their nails:

How did you fare in the Passfault test? Did your passwords turn out to be as safe as you thought? Share your thoughts in the comments!

How to miss the point!

They aren't attempting to predicted computing power of the future or how big evil hackers bot net is, but provide a useful security diagnostic tool by providing a quantifiable value to the strength of your password.

Yes it's for a given strength of attack and encryption, but so are any of these assessments. This does highlight the flaws of some "strong " passwords that rely on dictionary words and numbers.

I for one found it useful and will use it to guage the RELATIVE strength of future passwords. My new wifi password being 25 centuries :-)

Wow... this tool can tell how many years it would take to crack my password?
It's knows exactly how much computing power we will have 10 years from now???

It's also knows if I'm use 100 networked computers... or 25,000... to do the cracking????

That's pretty impressive. My account only allows 1 guess every 30 secs (at most).
To do even 100,000 guesses would take far longer than 100 seconds.

Huh? No one at androidpit knows what a "light-year" is? It's a measurement of *DISTANCE*... not of time.

Ugh.

Their method of trying thousands of combinayions per second will not work for most websites like google who suspend your login after a few failed attempts. Your wifi connection on the other hand I can see someone hacking at it for a few days.

I use an app called mSecure to keep track of my passwords.

Motorola Droid RAZR and RAZR Maxx Tips and Tricks -[AndroidTutor2018]

Motorola Droid RAZR and RAZR Maxx Tips and Tricks -[AndroidTutor2018]

AndroidTutor2018- So, you didn't fall for the iPhone and Galaxy S3 hype and decided to purchase a Droid RAZR or RAZR Maxx instead. You've just opened the box, what now? Besides Android's stellar features, Motorola has packed a number of goodies into these two bad boys. Here are some tips and tricks for getting the most out of your Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR Maxx:
Unlock Your Browser's Quick Controls

Quick controls allow you to easily switch views when browsing.
There's an easier way to browse. To use quick controls, open the browser and go to Settings -> Labs. From there, check the box next to quick controls. This will activate quick controls on your browser. To access them later, simply slide your finger from the left or right side black border on the screen area. The controls appear under your finger, allowing you to view the full desktop version of the site or save cntent for offline reading.
Use Voice Actions
You can get a lot done just by talking to your smartphone. To utilize voice actions, touch and hold the search button and say what you want to do. You can send an email, call a contact, pull up a map of Golden Gate Park or get directions to the nearest drugstore.
Radically Extend the Life of Your Battery

The RAZR Maxx already has an incredible battery.
Even without any tweaking, your Droid RAZR Maxx battery should last you 380 hours in standby mode and up to 21.5 hours of continuous talk time. If you'd like to further extend the life of your battery, go to apps and then click "smart actions." Here you can find settings "nighttime battery saver" and "battery extender." You can also extend battery life by turning off background data transfers. Go to Menu –> System Settings —> Data Usage —> Restrict Background Data. Other tactics involve the usual suspects: dimming the screen and limiting multimedia usage.
Use the HDMI Output to Play with Apps on the Big Screen

The RAZR's HDMI port. Photo from Ubergizmo.com
Did you know that your Droid RAZR can plug directly into your TV? Simply connect the HDMI cord from your phone's port to your HDTV for browsing on your television. Access all of your apps on the top right of the screen, click the right or left edges of the home screen to move between home screen panels and click to the left and right edges of the apps screen to flip through pages of apps and widgets.
Watch Your Phone's Videos on Your TV
Alternately, you can watch any video stored to your phone on your TV. Simply connect it via HDMI cable and adjust the viewable area on the HDTV by going to menu –> system settings —> display —> overscan.
Stream Content from Your Computer to Your Phone

Motorola's MotoCast is easy to set-up.
MotoCast allows you to stream or download music, pictures, videos and documents from your computer directly to your phone without any cables. I suggest using WiFi for this, as you could end up gobbling up your entire data plan in a matter of minutes. To enable MotoCast, go to Menu –> System Settings —> Accounts and Sync –> Add Account –> MotoCast ID and follow the prompts to create a MotoCast account on your smartphone. To enable your computer , connect your smartphone via USB, then follow the on-screen instructions, and log in to choose folders to share.
Automatically Upload Photos and Videos to Your Computer
If you'd like to automatically wirelessly save content from your phone to your computer, open your camera or video app, go to Settings –> MotoCast auto upload.
MOTOPRINT
Your Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx can automatically discover network printers for you – no drivers necessary. You can print emails, documents, and contatcs directly to shared printers on a WiFi network by going to menu – > print from the file of your choise. Add a printer by opening the document or file you want to print, then touching Menu –> Print –> Find printers.
Did we miss anything? Sound off on our Droid RAZR forums.

How To Bump Your INTERNAL Memory To 64GB On The Galaxy S3 and Note 2
-[AndroidTutor2018]

How To Bump Your INTERNAL Memory To 64GB On The Galaxy S3 and Note 2 -[AndroidTutor2018]

AndroidTutor2018- You read that right folks. I am going to show you an easy way to take your 16GB Galaxy S3 or Galaxy Note 2 (and a way for the Transformer Prime), and literally quadruple your INTERNAL memory (for installing apps and using as storage) up to 64GB. On top of that, you will even get to keep the 10 free gigs of internal you have left to give you a whopping 70GB total storage (64GB internal, roughly 10GB external). You guys think I’m joking, but I am not. The method for doing this is not only amazingly easy, but will literally save you hundreds of dollars on buying a device with more storage. So enough of my yacking. Let’s bump your 16GB up to 64 in literally less than 10 minute time.
The Proof
So guys, if you’ve never had a good enough reason to root your device, have a look at these before and after pictures. The pic on the left is from my Note 2 WITHOUT the mod applied, and the pic on the right is WITH the mod applied. Have a look:

Notice anything odd about that pic? That’s right...my 16GB is now rocking ALOT more internal memory isn’t it? But how is this possible?
Now before you guys leave this article due to your fear of rooting, STOP. Let me put this to you as clearly as possible: Rooting the S3 or the Note 2 (and applying this mod) is so easy that it will quite literally make you wanna slap yo mama. I’m serious. Matter of fact, I did indeed slap my mother after applying this mod, but due to how awesome it is, she understood.
Don't be afraid
You know how to upload a photo on Facebook right? You press “attach photo”, search your PC for the picture, and then press the “upload” button right? I mean, 13 year olds do it everyday. Rooting these 2 devices uses the EXACT SAME PRINCIPAL. You open up a tool called Odin, navigate to a file you downloaded, and literally press the go button. DONE. Rooting complete. It can also just as easily be reversed, so have no fear, ok?
All the files you need to root the Note 2 are here, and to root the S3, they are all here. It takes literally 2 minutes guys. Once you have done that, you can continue with the mod.
How it works
So now you’re probably asking “how is this possible? I mean hell, buying a 32GB or 64GB GS3 or Note 2 costs ALOT of money! Surely it can’t be that easy to bypass the money you would have to spend by applying a simple mod?”. Well folks, it is that easy, and all you need is a microSD card and a rooted device...nothing more. All this mod does is the following: It fools your phone into thinking that your external memory is your internal memory, and vice versa. In a word: BRILLIANT.
The mod comes from XDA member mattiadj, who actually made it for the Galaxy S3 originally, and it just so happens to work on the Note 2 as well. BIG credits to him (and szymi22 for bringing it to the attention of Note 2 owners) for his awesome work. So now, lets get into installing it.
The right card
Keep in mind that this is only worth doing if you have at least a 32GB microSD card. I am using a 64GB card, and it works great. I personally recommend a class 10 64GB Sandisk Ultra card, which you can buy for about 50 bucks (here it is on Amazon, 32GB here, which is around 30 bucks). That’s just my recommendation though, and you can use whichever card you wish.
The simple method to apply this mod
So here we go. For the Note 2, all you need to do is the following:
Root your device
MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP IN CASE SOMETHING GOES WRONG
Head over to THIS thread on XDA
Download the Perseus kernel file (the mod requires a custom kernel) IF your ROM already has an option to apply this kernel, you shouldn't need to flash it seperately, but I would go ahead and flash the original to be on the safe side (Mikes Android Revolution ROM uses it, which I highly recommend).
Download the correct 11extsd2internalsd file. If your card is 32GB, get the FAT32 file. If it’s higher than 32GB, get the exfat file.
Reboot into recovery
Flash the kernel
Flash the 11extsd2internalsd file
Reboot
Freak out with your new storage space
The files on that thread should also work for the GS3 (they are even still named S3 files on the Note 2 thread), but just in case, the original S3 thread for this mod can be found here. He also includes a video tutorial.
When you reboot, you will find that your internal memory has increased, and that your “original” internal memory is now being read as your SD card. Now you can go crazy with installing as many big games and apps as you wish, along with pictures, movies, or whatever the hell you desire :)
On the Note 2, I have noticed that the only downside is that games and certain apps can take literally just a few seconds longer to load, but in most cases, I notice no changes whatsoever in performance.
For the Transformer Prime (thaks to developer TweakerL for creating this AMAZING mod), the method is a bit different, but will also bring you an INSANE performance boost due the hardware Asus used for the Prime’s internal memory. More info and the method for doing it on the Prime can be found here.
A great reason to go Android that even iPhone users can't deny
This is another huge reason why I love Android. Only with its open source system can mods like this be done. It’s easy, it’s very practical, iPhone users will DROOL, and you can remove it if you don’t want to have it anymore ( instructions for doing this are on the GS3 thread. Or you simply reflash your ROM to remove it). The benefits are HUGE, and I am filling up my Note 2 with all the games that I had on my Prime before.
So there you have it guys! This mod will save you a LOT of money, and will totally open up the possibilities of your Note 2, Galaxy S3, or Transformer Prime. Big credits again to XDA members mattiadj for this awesome mod!
Enjoy!
P.S: Some points our commenters below reminded me of that I didn't include. For Transformer Prime owners, using data2sd will literally double the speed in terms of daily performance for your Prime. That being said, if you would somehow accidentally pop the microsd card out, you would need to reboot after reinserting it. There should be no data corruption due to the journaling used in the required ext4 partition that data2sd uses. The same hack for Prime exists using ext2 with NO journaling, which is double as fast as ext4, but the downside to that is that if the card pops out, your data will corrupt, and you will need to reinstall your ROM.
For Note 2 & S3 owners, I haven't tried popping out the card, but as its pretty damn hard/almost impossible to do anyway, it should not be an issue that a simple reboot couldn't fix if you did somehow manage to do it.

You should either rewrite or remove this article, as it is very misleading, as was pointed out.
And how could anybody possibly save "hundreds of dollars" by telling the phone to use the external memory instead of the internal?? I hope you don't work in the sales industry.

Just so you guys know, this mod causes A SHITLOAD of TECHNICAL PROBLEMS. I installed this exact mod (On a different phone, though) and trust me. You will run into more tech problems than you know what to do with. Namely whenever something DOES try to save to your SD card (such as the camera app) it gets confused and just deletes your video or photo. Don't forget clearing your browser's cache is an all-day event now, and many times I have found myself LOGGING INTO FACEBOOK or similar apps every time I turn on my phone.

Im sorry, but the title of this article is terribly misleading as is some of the content. Youre not "bumping" your internal memory an iota, youre just tricking the phone into thinking your sd card is now your internal memory. Thats it. You cant have 64gb internal and an additional 64gb with another sd card for example. Youre just as limited as you were before. As for how this will "save you a LOT of money", I must be mssing something. How will this save you even a $1?

Tips & Tricks: How To Enable PC Keyboard Layout In Jelly Bean 4.2

Tips & Tricks: How To Enable PC Keyboard Layout In Jelly Bean 4.2 -[AndroidTutor2018]

AndroidTutor2018- I have been using the new Android 4.2 keyboard (and camera) on my Galaxy Note 2 for 2 days now, and it is nothing short of awesome. I love the way that it looks, the improved responsiveness, and the fact that you can even "swype" with it. As with many Android releases, Google has a tendency to hide features, and this latest hidden treasure is a very nice feature for tablet owners. What feature am I referring to? PC Keyboard layout. Let’s have a quick look at it, and learn how to enable it!
The PC keyboard layout naturally has more keys than the standard Android keyboard layout, with both numbers and symbols being faster and easier to access (this came standard on the Note 2, and I’m glad to see it coming to stock Android). It doesn’t work too well for standard sized smartphones, as it’s simply too small for anything smaller than a 5 inch screen (great for the Note and Note 2). It works well on the Nexus 7 (and 10 inch tablets), as shown in the pics below (screenshots are from a German device, but you get the point):
( PC layout above and standard layout on the bottom):

The option to enable this PC layout can be found in Settings - Language & Input - Android Keyboard Settings - Advanced Settings - User input styles.
First, simply click on “Add style” (bottom right), select your language, and then select PC. Now that the layout is activated, you will need to follow the same steps under “System Language” (check on your language with “PC”). Then simply press the globe on your keyboard to change layouts and choose the PC layout you have just set up.
You're all set! Pretty nice right?

Anna, both can be found as an .apk file and seem to work well if you are running a new version of Android.

This is a good tip. I am debating on getting the Note2 and this makes it even a more interesting a choice.

I installed the camera pack on my Galaxy S2 and it works great. I am running CM10 and am enjoying these cool new features.

I don't really care about the keyboard but I'm gonna try to find the Camera apk. I heard it only works for the Galaxy Nexus though? Whatever, I'm not gonna find out if I don't try.

There's a way to do it without root! You can just install the apk like normal (keyboard...camera I'm not sure).

@Chris - No problem bro!

@Anna - Its floating around the net. You can get it on XDA. I just downloaded a patched version (I believe from android police) of the camera that works on all devices that I flashed in recovery, and the keyboard I found on Xda (also available as a flashable zip).

Android Version Secret Image -[AndroidTutor2018]

Android Version Secret Image -[AndroidTutor2018]

AndroidTutor2018- Do you want to know more about your Android phone? Well why not find the secret Flying Ice Cream Sandwich Androids on your Android 4.0 phone. If you don’t have an Android 4.0 phone don’t worry there might just be a secret image on your version too.

Are you are looking for a random fact about your android phone? How about discovering a hidden image in the about option in your settings?
The first mention of this that I found was on a YouTube post about hidden flying ice-cream sandwich androids in the newest Android version (Android 4.0). If you are lucky enough to have a phone that is running Android 4.0 here is how you access the flying ice cream sandwich.
Go to your Settings and then scroll to the bottom and go into the About option. Now scroll down to the “Android Version” description and press it several times quickly, you should now see this image:

That’s not all though, press and hold down on the image and you will get access to the flying ice cream sandwiches, and they look like this:

When I saw this I got curious and decided to see if my version (Android 2.3.6) had anything behind the Android Version description. What I found was Zombie Art by Jack Larson with an Android hanging out with the zombies.

This for me defines what Android and its developers are about. The platform is designed for users to take it and morph into what they need and want. The developers of the software seem to infuse this sense of humour into the platform not because it’s good for marketing but just because it’s fun, that’s my opinion anyway.
Have you got a different version of Android? What’s behind your Android Version description?

Great. Jellybean has a symbol of one jelly bean. Swipe it up and you get lots of floating jelly beans. Swipe them fast or slow and they fly all over the screen
